Lisa Wright - Button Gwinnett Elementary School

I do not remember the actual day that I knew I wanted to become a teacher, but as a young adult, I knew I had a calling to work with children. After working as a paraprofessional for fifteen years I decided that I would love to be a teacher. I did not go to college until my thirties. As the second person in my family to go to college, I felt privileged just having made it through.

My philosophy on educating children starts with this; learning in a classroom should be meaningful to the student. While working in the school system, I have observed many students and noticed that they learn best when actively engaged. In addition, students retain more when they can associate learning to personal experiences. I also believe that all children have the ability to learn. Some children may not be able to understand every topic, but that does not mean they can not learn other things. Children learn in many different ways; some may need to hear it, see it, or some may be hands-on learners.
