Garry Lawson - Midway Middle School
I was born on a small farm in Bacon County, Georgia. My parents always emphasized the importance of a good education to me and my brother because they were not given that opportunity. Through my parents sacrifices, love, and guidance my brother is now a Certified Public Accountant and I rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major in the Army and then, of course, became a teacher.
After serving my country for 27 years, I began my teaching career at Southwest Middle School in Chatham County. I saw teaching as a way to continue serving my country by challenging my students the same way I challenged my soldiers. I attempt at every opportunity to pass the value of education and the doors that an education may open to all of my students. I am just as proud pledging allegiance to my flag in my classroom as I ever was saluting my flag as a soldier.
