Freda Gardner - Lewis Frasier Middle School

Many factors influenced me to become an educator. During my sixth grade year of grade school, I realized the importance of teachers. Mrs. Weaver, my sixth grade teacher, gave genuine encouragement and heartfelt conversations to all of her students and this gave me a different perspective of my life. She guided me through experiences and offered me opportunities so I could take an active interest in my education. She truly motivated her students to pursue their dreams. As I journeyed into the military, it became more evident teaching was in my future. Working as a medical specialist, my platoon and I were responsible for teaching over two hundred soldiers combat lifesaver skills.

My greatest contribution to education is my devotion to my students. My ability to bridge the detachment between academics and the “real world” is an asset I attribute to the military. My ultimate gratification can be contributed to the success of my students with disabilities. It is empowering to see students discovering they can excel.
